New frequencies and application areas for Short Range Devices (SRD)

For nuclear magnetic resonance applications

In terms of the number of radios used, SRD devices are the most common. Therefore, devices in Europe must be measured and evaluated according to the Radio Equipment Directive (RED). The user of these devices does not need a license for operation.

Examples are devices with Bluetooth, WLAN, RFID, radio thermometers, radio sensors, radiolocation, implanted devices, ...

SRD frequency ranges are defined in the EU from 9 kHz to 246 GHz in different frequency bands. In general, SRDs have to share the frequency range with other radio technologies.

On February 10, 2022, another amendment appeared in the EU Official Journal in the form of Implementing Decision (EU) 2022/180. This defined new frequency ranges for nuclear magnetic resonance applications.

The requirements of this EU publication must be implemented by all EU states in so-called general licenses.
