Cybersecurity is currently becoming an increasingly important issue. The example of the planned EU regulation on machinery products to replace the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC shows that this topic is not only finding its way into the Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU, but also into other areas of law. Experts will provide first-hand reports on these two topics at our 10th GLOBALNORM Product Compliance Conference on July 7 and 8, 2022.
The publication of the new Machinery Regulation in the EU Official Journal will certainly take time. Nevertheless, the inclusion of the topic "Cybersecurity" is one of the major changes to the previous Machinery Directive.
There is therefore currently a lot going on in the field of standardization. An example of this is the IEC TS 63074 project "Safety of machinery - Security aspects related to functional safety of safety-related control systems" from the IEC TC 44 technical committee. The first Committee Draft (CD) was distributed on January 21, 2022. As part of an industrial automation system, safety-related control systems of machines can be subject to security attacks that can lead to the loss of the ability to maintain safe operation of a machine.
Starting points for protection against such attacks are addressed in this working draft:
- Security aspects related to functional security.
- Cybersecurity and functional safety of machines
- Review and maintenance of security countermeasures
- Information for the user of the machine(s)
This document is planned to be published as a "Technical Specification (TS)" already in the first half of 2023. GLOBALNORM experts will give an overview of the current standardization projects in the field of cybersecurity of different industries during an online seminar (see link below).
